PwC’s refreshed VR training numbers: four stats L&D directors should keep close
PwC's refreshed VR training data changes the case for L&D investment. Four stats worth knowing: 4× faster completion, 275% higher confidence, 80% year-on-recall, and cost parity with classroom at 375 learners. The premium option is now the default.

The PwC enterprise VR training study has been quoted in every corporate training pitch deck for the last four years. The numbers were strong then and they got refreshed this cycle. The refresh changes the budget conversation more than the headline coverage suggests.
Four numbers from the current data set are worth keeping in front of the next L&D budget review.
1. Four times faster
VR learners complete training four times faster than classroom learners on the same material. The mechanism is straightforward - the learner is on task continuously, the equipment cannot be passively spectated, and the friction of "going to the training room" disappears.
For a workforce that takes 60 minutes off the floor to attend a 60-minute classroom session, four times faster is not a learning statistic. It is an operational statistic.
2. 275% more confident
Post-training, VR learners report 275% higher confidence in applying the skills on the job. Confidence is not the same as competence - but in safety, security, and emergency response work, hesitation in the first three seconds is what differentiates a near miss from an incident. The confidence delta has been independently observed across PwC and Accenture studies.
3. 80% retention after a year
A year after the training, learners retain roughly 80% of the content. The classroom comparison is usually quoted between 20 and 30%. The retention curve is the part of the case that finance teams under-price - refresher cadence can be cut, which compounds the cost picture below.
4. The cost parity threshold moved
This is the one most worth re-reading. PwC's refreshed study puts cost parity between VR and classroom delivery at 375 learners. At 3,000 learners, VR is 52% cheaper. The earlier breakeven, reported a few years ago, sat higher. The hardware came down, the content reuse came up, and the maths shifted in favour of VR for any organisation training above a few hundred people in a programme.
What changed in the budget conversation
For programmes under 100 learners, classroom often still wins on cost. Above 400, the case flips. Above 1,000, the case is no longer about cost - it is about whether anyone wants to fly that many people to a training centre.
The implication for training providers and L&D departments is the same: VR is no longer the premium option. It is the default for mid-to-large programmes, with classroom retained for the high-touch, low-volume scenarios where physical presence still adds value.
What we are seeing on the ground
At SkillCampVR we work with frontline workforces across a wide range of industries. The numbers track. We benchmark VR delivery well below classroom equivalents on a per-learner-hour basis. Reference customer programmes have reported significant cost reductions at scale, and a consistent result across our clients is 5× faster learning at parity content depth.
The PwC refresh is not surprising to anyone running a deployed VR programme. The useful thing about the refresh is that it lets L&D directors put a third-party number in front of a finance team that has already heard the internal one. The case is over. The work now is execution.
